Let Not Mobility Issues Affect the Quality of Life of Your Dog

The adjustable and customizable wheelchair from the renowned brand Walkin’ Pets is the most advanced dog wheelchair on the market. It adjusts to the size of any dog, is made of aluminum and is adjustable to fit dogs of various sizes that face mobility challenges. It supports the rear part of the body, allowing disabled dogs to move with the help of their front legs.

Wheelchairs are a great solution for dogs with hind leg issues as they enable them to remain active and independent despite their injury. Since it positively affects their physical and mental health, in some cases, the wheelchair can aid in the recovery of reversible paraplegia.

It has 2 modes of use:

  • Walking assistance: for dogs with decreased mobility of the hind legs. It offers safe support while still allowing free movement of the hind legs, letting the dog move independently. This way, the dog can retain muscle mass or recover after surgery and become independently mobile faster.
  • Full support: for dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. It provides them with more independence and prevents skin ulcers and pressure sores caused by prolonged lying in one position. In some cases, with the help of the wheelchair, the dog may regain feeling in the legs and become mobile again, as the hind legs receive better blood flow and stimulation compared to lying down.

Usually, a veterinarian (orthopedic) or physiotherapist recommends the use of a wheelchair for: hip dysplasia, arthritis, disc herniation, proprioceptive deficit (balance issues), as assistance in rehabilitation or planned immobilization of the hind legs after surgery.

The unique design of the Ortocanis wheelchair is confirmed and recommended by orthopedic veterinarians. Made of aluminum and neoprene harness, which makes attaching the wheelchair to the dog easier, prioritizing the dog's comfort.

It is easy and quick to assemble, with instructions and all necessary tools included.

How to Acclimate Your Dog to a Wheelchair?

It is crucial that your dog wants to be in the wheelchair, feels comfortable in it, and accepts it as part of themselves. It is important that the front legs are in good condition to help with movement. Using positive reinforcement, gradually introduce the wheelchair—first, let your dog sniff and get familiar with it. Only later attach them to it for a short period, and don't forget to reward them for every small progress they make. Generally, dogs get used to the wheelchair within a day. In cases where the animal has been inactive for a long time before getting the wheelchair and has muscle atrophy, the acclimation should be done gradually, preferably under the watchful eye of an orthopedic specialist and/or physiotherapist. Only with slow acclimation will the front leg muscles strengthen sufficiently to enable movement with the wheelchair. Once your dog accepts the wheelchair and happily goes for walks, their muscles will strengthen, and they will be in a better mood and more confident due to the gained independence.
